Campaign planning timeline to election day 2027
Kenya's next general election is fixed for Tuesday 10 August 2027. Working backwards from that date, this is the order in which a campaign should build its team, ground operation, message and polling-agent network.
Plan in six phases: foundation (12–9 months out), ground operation (9–6 months), nominations (dates set by parties and the IEBC), the campaign period (6–1 months), election day on 10 August 2027, and results and petitions afterwards. Only the election date and the post-election deadlines are fixed by the Constitution (Art. 101, Art. 138, Art. 140, Art. 87). Everything else follows the IEBC timetable.

Foundation: team, money and data
- Confirm the office you are running for and study its electoral area — every constituency and ward you must cover.
- Appoint the core team: campaign manager, finance lead, communications lead and a field coordinator.
- Write a budget and a fundraising plan, including how M-PESA donations will be tracked and reconciled.
- Bring contact lists into one database, remove duplicates and record consent for every contact you will message.
- Register an SMS sender ID well ahead of high-volume periods — at least eight weeks is a safe margin.

Build the ground operation
- Appoint a coordinator for every ward and make each one responsible for recruiting volunteers there.
- Start daily field reporting now, while stakes are low, so the habit is in place before the campaign period.
- Hold community meetings and record attendance, issues raised and follow-ups by ward.
- Support voter registration in your area during IEBC registration periods; the dates are set by the IEBC.

Dates set by party rules and the IEBC timetable
Party nominations and candidate registration
- Know your party’s nomination rules and deadlines, or the requirements for standing as an independent.
- Prepare the documents and supporter signatures candidates must submit; the IEBC publishes the requirements.
- Plan the campaign so the team keeps working through the nomination period instead of stopping for it.
-
6 to 1 months before · February 2027 – July 2027
Campaign period: message, events and agents
- Run a steady message calendar by ward and channel: SMS, WhatsApp, voice and social, in English and Swahili.
- Track opponents’ rallies, promises and endorsements with sources, so responses are based on facts.
- Recruit a polling agent for every polling station in your area, plus reserves. Get the official polling station list from the IEBC.
- Train agents on check-in, incident reporting and recording results, and run at least one full practice drill.
- The official campaign period is set by the IEBC; check its timetable before planning rallies.

Election day
- Confirm every agent is at their station and checked in before polls open.
- Report incidents from the station as they happen, with photos where possible.
- Collect a photo of each signed polling-station declaration — Form 34A for the presidential race, Forms 35A–39A for the other offices — and check your internal tally against it.
- Run the war room from one live view of coverage, incidents and results.

After the declaration of results
Results, run-offs and petitions
- Presidential race: if no candidate wins more than half the votes and 25% in more than half the counties, a fresh election is held within 30 days.
- A presidential election petition must be filed in the Supreme Court within 7 days of the declaration; the court decides within 14 days of filing.
- Petitions about any other election must be filed within 28 days of the IEBC’s declaration.
- Keep every result, photo and incident report your agents submitted — they are the evidence a petition or a defence will need.
